Guitars Not Guns is a non-profit organization that provides guitars and music instruction to underprivileged youth. Instruction is provided in a classroom setting by qualified volunteer instructors. By refocusing at-risk children and teens through a creative outlet for all their energy and passion, Guitars Not Guns steers these young people away from gang violence, drugs, alcohol and the crime associated with that path. In April 2010 Michael John brought Guitars Not Guns to Alta Vista High School, a public continuation high school in Mt View, CA. Working alongside Santa Clara GNG Chapter President Bob Megantz and San Mateo County GNG Chapter President John Allure, a successful joint collaboration is now flourishing with Level I classes being offered quarterly. A Level Two class is in the works for early 2011. In addition to receiving instruction the students are provided a guitar, gig bag, tuner, picks and a workbook which upon graduation they may keep.
